I was talking to a friend yesterday about my line in Sunday’s sermon about arrogance (He was accusing himself, but I don’t see it). Anyway, it started this thought trail in my mind about arrogance and confidence. There IS a difference. Simply put, confidence is believing you are good . . . Arrogance is believing you are better than EVERYONE ELSE.
Confidence is IMPORTANT . . . If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you, either. Confidence is knowing you can get the job done. I liken it to a pitcher in baseball or a point guard in basketball. You have to believe you can get the job done before you can step up there and make a difference. If you have no confidence, you are toast before you begin.
Arrogance is DANGEROUS . . . I have known many talented, arrogant people whose walk could back up their talk but ONLY FOR A SEASON. Eventually, we all meet our match and thensome. Yes, even Michael Jordan has been beaten . . . Even Tiger Woods has lost a match . . . If I were foolish enough to believe there was no one better than me, my fall would be great. And so would yours.
Sunday I made the statement that “humility and arrogance cannot co-exist in the same person.” However, humility and confidence CAN. Which are you?
