One of those things that makes you go "hmmmm"

21 Oct

IF the New York Yankess are the Evil Empire (and we ALL know they ARE), then what does that make their mortal enemies, the Boston Red Sox???

Is this more of a Star Wars thing, or is it more of a Star TREK thing with the Yankees playing the role of the Klingons and the Red Sox having more of a Romulan thing going on??

What a dilemma!! Makes me go “hmmmm.”

Hmmmm.

PS – No matter what the resolution, Notre Dame still got beat yesterday. So it was a good Saturday.

Joe Torre

19 Oct

I have never been a fan of the Evil Empire, but I do like Joe Torre. And, I understand he is looking for a job today. George Steinbrenner (er, I mean the Emperor) did not technically FIRE Torre, but the organization chose not to renew his contract.

In my estimation, especially when you consider Torre’s record, this is an indicator of modern society and the desire for INSTANT everything. NO MATTER WHAT, the Dark Side has to WIN WIN WIN. True, the Emperor pays enough for them to be near the top every year, and THEY WERE . . . Now it is someone else’s problem.

I am just thankful that Joe Torre has come back from the dark side of the Force. So, in honor of Joe, a Wookie salute:

An Interesting Story

18 Oct

At the FBA meeting this week, someone told me an interesting story. A pastor was preparing to preach one Sunday and he was just overcome with emotion. He couldn’t speak. Finally, he looked at his congregation and said “You folks really don’t give a (darn), do you?” (You know he did not say darn).

He left the church and to make a long story short, he expected to be fired. What happened was he was contacted by his deacons, who in turn told him he was right and instead of firing him asked him what they should do.

I have no idea why this story was told to me. I really don’t feel like Ebenezer is there, but it was told to me out of the blue. So I tell it to you.

So, Ebenezer, do you???

By the way, I heard that a friend of mine whose name I will change to protect his identity . . . Licheal Motts . . . Has a girlfriend???

A Great Night and a real shame

17 Oct

The Annual Meeting of the Florence Baptist Association was held yesterday. Business session at 4:30, worship at 7:oo. I had the honor of bringing the annual sermon (which I think I tanked, but that is another story). It was a great day . . . BUT.

It was a great day because we gathered together to see and hear what our baptist association is doing, not only around Florence but around the world. My guess is the average Ebenezerite has NO IDEA of all of the things in which our association is involved (because I a relatively connected and I did not realize all of the stuff we are doing.) It was eye-opening to see all of the things we are doing.

The real shame in all of the is that the average Ebenezerite will NEVER know without being there. I should say no more about this, because I am very disappointed. I made the mistake of not over-hyping it on Sunday morning because I did not want to seem like I was bragging about preaching. Okay, I goofed on that one. There were several ways and venues in which I announced it and talked about it. With pretty much no return on that investment.

On one hand, I will be the biggest cheerleader for it next year. And I wish it could be moved to Sunday evening for more church member participation. And on the other hand, I hope we all realize what a great gift we have in our baptist association. I learned a valuable lesson last night.

I just wish a few more had been there to learn it with me.

Why would the devil pick on YOU??

15 Oct

Whaddya think?? Why would he pick on someone like you?? My buddy Tommy Dowling would remind us that, unlike God, the devil is not omnipresent. (See, Tommy, I WAS listening.) Tommy is right . . . Now, we know biblically that he really does have helpers, so theoretically he would not have to be there to be picking on you.

So, for the answer to the “why” question: You must be doing something RIGHT in the kingdom of God. Otherwise, he would not mess with you. This week I watched many of my friends who are serving and working hard facing incredible hurdles and traps . . . That is the way he works. If he can distract us, he can stop God’s work from happening.

Judging from the marriage retreat and from yesterday, he failed on this one. But he will be back. If the temptation of Jesus teaches us anything, it is that the devil is persistent. Will WE be ready?

Marriage Enrichment Weekend

13 Oct

What a weekend!! (I say that a lot . . . ) We had 45 couples at Ebenezer this weekend strengthening marriages and families. You know the devil is not happy about all of this, because something good happened for the kingdom of God. I am thankful for all of the hard work that went into this, and to the couples that volunteered to make this thing happen. You guys did great, and honored God with this event!

It was AWESOME!

Some new looks

If you link from the church website, you might want to bookmark this site . . . I don’t know how much longer I will link from it. LONG STORY, but nothing to worry about!!

The Great Pergola of 2007

10 Oct

Well, here it is . . .

Yes, the pergola that Diana, Krissy, Drew and I have been building with my mom and dad is FINALLY standing. This little puppy is the source of several good stories (that I will not mention right now). This is actually the SECOND time it has been put up, and I REALLY don’t want to talk about the first time. But, here it is . . . 10’x30′ of HEAVY treated lumber, arranged in such a way that we can continue mom’s plans to create a shaded area for them to be able to enjoy the outdoors and grill.

My basketball goal used to hang over that garage door. Behind the pergola is about a 10′ drop off into the back yard. That is one of the reasons I was so good at shooting from the left side of the court — I used to shoot over there all the time so I would be there if the rebound came back that way. Cause, if it did and I was not there, I was running to keep it from rolling in the creek or into the wild.

We are going to put a hand rail around it and have a couple of ideas for more shade on the left side. And, all in all, it really was fun to build.

Is Ebenezer under attack?

10 Oct

Most certainly. I think it is my “fault” . . . Sunday night, I preached about our need to win souls for Christ. I guess something good is about to happen at Ebenezer, because Satan is hitting us with both barrels this week. I have seen attacks on our music ministry, on our youth ministry, on our weekday program, on Sunday school classes, and on our office. And I am sure there is more to come.

What can we do?? PRAY. Pray for each other. Pray for our church. Pray for me, and I will pray for you! Because this has ALREADY been a tough week . . .

How Great is OUR Faithfulness?

By the way, anyone heard from the mayor of Atlantic City???
