The Bride of Christ

14 Jul

The Church … Not a church, but THE CHURCH.  The love of God.  Those for whom Jesus Christ died a cruel, inhumane death.  Those for whom He paid the price of salvation.  The church.

I believe with all of my heart the church is under attack.  From a variety of places.

Satan leads the attack.  Sometimes from outside, and sometimes from inside.  He attacks with pride.  He attacks with pop-culture references and public opinions.  It’s funny how the public can so readily form an opinion about things they really don’t understand.  YES, there are elements of the church and elements of living for Christ that can only be understood by those who have a relationship with Him.  And we are attacked for this.

There are others who attack.  Sometimes they don’t even realize it.  Those who bring their own agendas into the local church.  Those who refuse to listen to the Holy Spirit, or even frame their agendas in the frame of a call from God.  (If I walked up to you right now, punched you in the face, and then proclaimed that God called me to do it, would that make it acceptable???)

There are some who lead others in ways that are contrary to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.  Some who cause damage to the church family without even realize it.  I really believe some of them are NOT doing this intentionally, and would NEVER hurt the church if they realized it.  But they are so focussed on THEIR needs, on THEIR goals, on what THEY want, that they forget to stop and ask God what HE wants for them.  It hurts the church by misleading others, perhaps teaching them things that are contrary to the purpose of the church.  And this is VERY UNHEALTHY.

There are also some who do this quite purposefully.  It always amazes me that there are people on this planet who thrive on conflict.  They are not happy unless they are unhappy.  Some of them enjoy being the victim, and everything that happens in life is the fault of another.  Perhaps they enjoy the attention.  I like peace in life too much to live that way … but that is just me.  A church can be an easy target for controversy and “stirring things up.”  And this, again, is VERY UNHEALTHY.

The healthiest church member is one that treats the church like a family, not like the K&W Cafeteria, picking and choosing which part of God’s word to which they will listen.  The healthiest church member has read Paul’s many descriptions of a healthy church.  One of the things Paul believed in is the gifting of God to the local church.  God gives every church the gifts she needs to do what God calls her to do.  How can we be all God wants us to be if we are treating His church badly?  One of our responsibilities is to find our gift and EXERCISE IT as part of the bigger picture of our church.

Is your church a home??  A family??  Or something else?

THE CHURCH IS THE BRIDE OF CHRIST AND SHOULD BE TREATED WITH ALL OF THE RESPECT SHE DESERVES.

Doing the right thing

12 Jul

I know that doing the right thing is always the way God wants me to go.  Sometimes it is also the most difficult path forward.

Don’t get me wrong … Sometimes it is EASY to do the right thing.  And OBVIOUS.  And then there are times in life when it is not easy … and not so obvious.  Times when PRAYER and TRUST IN GOD are the only guides I have going for me.  As a pastor, there are times when I KNOW I will catch flack for doing the right thing.  Sometimes God calls us to do things that are not popular and not so readily understood by others.

And, yet, I know if I trust Him and stay close, He will protect me from all of that.  And He will protect His church.

Ultimately, as much as I love His church, I know He loves it a billion times more …And that’s a lot!

To Blog or Not to Blog

10 Jul

Lately I haven’t blogged as much as I normally do.  We all hit those times in life when it might be better to keep our thoughts to ourselves …  Don’t worry!!  I am fine!!  Just needin to keep things to myself right now!

On the other hand, I’ve been on quite a tear of working around the house!!

Callin YOU out

7 Jul

I’ve thought about it … Prayed about it … Know it needs to happen … so, HERE GOES:

I’m CALLIN YOU OUT, CHURCH!

Once I had a guy come to my office who thought I was mad at him.  He promptly invited me to step out into the parking lot to settle our differences.  (I never was mad at him, and to this day that one blows my mind)

I’m not mad at you … and, frankly my dear, I don’t care if you are mad at ME …  That’s not why I am calling you out.

God desires worshipers who worship Him in SPIRIT and in TRUTH.  NOT OUT OF OBLIGATION.  NOT OUT OF ROTE ACTIVITY.  NOT OUT OF COMFORT.  NOT OUT OF TRADITION.  NOT BECAUSE IT IS THE “THING TO DO.”  But because WE KNOW HIM TO BE GOD ALMIGHTY, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH.  AND OUT OF A HEART RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.

(Enough of the yelling … my voice is already sore)

Specifically, if you call Ebenezer your church, I DARE YOU TO BE THERE THIS SUNDAY.

A New Dynamic

5 Jul

Are you stuck in a rut?

Sometimes we get stuck and don’t even realize it.  In fact, it becomes part of us, a comfortable part of us to which we become accustomed.  And in our “path of least resistance” mentality, we fight any change that threatens to pull us out of it.

Sometimes I wonder if we, as the church, are stuck in a rut.  Of our own invention.  We tend to formulize our worship and our behaviors about God.  That, friends, is a scary place to be.  I don’t want to be there anymore!!

I wonder about this:  If we started a new dynamic at Ebenezer, a new way of thinking about worship, how would people respond?  Some would be angered by even READING this statement, assuming I am bringing in dancers to stand by the pulpit or that I will start preaching in shorts and t-shirts.  And when we assume …. well, you know the rest.

No, I hope and pray a new dynamic will start in our hearts!!  I preached two Sundays ago about worship, citing the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.  Jesus Himself said that true worship is not about a LOCATION, but is done in SPIRIT and in TRUTH.  True worship comes from the HEART.

Perhaps this “new dynamic” I’ve been thinking and praying about is not so new … but it is SO NEEDED TODAY.  I wonder how long it will take all of us to GET IT??

Places of Great Faith

1 Jul

You know how everyone goes through patches in their lives where it seems the attacks are coming from all sides and all you have as your shield is Jesus Christ???  Yeah … I’m there right now.  There are difficulties on many fronts right now.  Diana and I are facing many opportunities for our faith to grow!!  And I am thankful to be facing them with her …

Where do YOU turn in places like this?  I am thankful that no matter how crazy things get, God is there and He cares!  And He has a plan!!!

Weekend

28 Jun

So, how was YOUR weekend?  Do anything interesting?  I DID!!

On Saturday, I participated in TWO weddings.  Within two and a half hours of each other.  One at First Presbyterian and one at Ebenezer.  Dustin and Ellen Fails were wed at First Presbyterian.  I’ve known Dustin for the entire 15 years I’ve been at Ebenezer.  It was quite a privilege to be part of that one.  Billy and Margaret Early were wed at EBC, to a standing-room-only house.  Margaret was at Clemson when we got to EBC, but she and her family have been great friends to us, so it was equally an honor.

I call this the double-header … I’ve never had to do two weddings in one day.  Now, there was another minister in each wedding, so I didn’t have to do two complete weddings.  But it was interesting just the same.

After the second wedding I came home, cooked out for the family, and watched the Tigers not hit the ball and lose to USC in the CWS.  And, regardless of some of my Gamecock friends that have told me I am not allowed to do this, I have EVERY INTENTION of cheering for USC as they try to beat UCLA tonight.

And the cherry on top of all this:  A BEAR WAS CAPTURED IN FLORENCE THIS WEEKEND!!!  A BEAR!  IN FLORENCE!!  They apparently caught him at All-Star Lanes.  And the sad thing was he was on track to bowl around 250 until they cuffed him and stuffed him!  (They really DID catch him near the bowling alley.)

Hope your weekend was a good one!

The Latest on Dad

23 Jun

Dad is still in the Cottages at Brushy Creek rehab.  He will be there for another week, and will then run out of rehab days according to Medicare.  He IS getting somewhat stronger, but is still struggling with the intellectual side of it all.  It is so clear now that there is additional neurological damage and Dad is now dealing with the “swiss-cheese” effects of it all.

Mom is doing better with things.  She wants to purchase a wheelchair accessible van, which Elaine and I are searching for now.  One of the next big personal goals is my nephew’s graduation from Air Force OCS  in July down in Montgomery.  I sure hope Dad can make that trip.

Today’s Funny from Mikey

22 Jun

Our teacher asked us what our favorite animal was and I said, “Fried chicken.” She said I wasn’t funny. But she couldn’t have been right – everyone else in the class laughed.

My parents told me to always be truthful and honest, and I am. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken – pork and beef and fish too.

Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal’s office. I told him what happened, and he laughed too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, just like she’d asked the other children. So I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal’s office again. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admire most.

I told her, “Colonel Sanders.”

Guess where I am now…

Father’s Day 2010

20 Jun

Father’s Day.  2010.  Wow.

We’ve got some great dads here at Ebenezer.  Giants of faith and leaders of families who live it just the way God wants them to.  Who make no bones about the fact they are ready to lay down their lives, if need be, for their families.

I guess we might catch grief over this, but we did not ask the dads to stand up during the worship service.  We always do that for the moms, but seldom ever do that for the dads.  And I am SURE someone will fuss.  But I have never been one to make worship about US and about OUR RECOGNITION.  Isn’t it supposed to be all about JESUS??

Anyway, Happy Father’s Dad to all dads out there!!  I’ve already called my Dad.  He is still in the Cottages Rehab in Greer and making progress.  Hopefully he will be home in a week or so.  Hope all of you and your families have a great day!!!
