A little productivity goes a long way

17 Mar

I am very thankful for Ebenezerites … They are some of the best people in the world!! Two of them, Olin Bullock and Jimmy SAMs sprung me from jail today for a secret mission.

We went to the YAB today and got a few things in place for the completion of the great thermostat project of 2011. Just a little work got things ready for the completion of that project.

And, for all who would fuss about me being there:

I was only there with 3 people
I was only there for a little while
All I did was give a wee little bit of direction

And, besides, productivity is good medicine for me!

Remaining Relevant as a church

1 Mar

Much has been written, much has been said about remaining relevant as the local church.  Every church should strive towards relevance.  Some churches take great offense at the thought that they might not be relevant … still, other churches make part of their mantra the “fact” that traditional churches are NO LONGER relevant and all should flock to their brand of fun.  NEITHER OF THESE ARE BUILDING THE KINGDOM OF GOD.  (The kingdom is made up of all churches that seek to serve Him … look it up if you don’t believe me!!)

So, every church should be involved in the search for relevance.  Where will that search take us??  Worship styles?  The latest technologies?  A sharp-looking hologram machine that projects the pastor everywhere he wants to go and be so he can deliver a message from God in stunning 3D clarity … (OOOO, OOOO, one of those for Ebenezer, please!!!!!)

I could keep on writing and writing, but as usual will get to the point:  The search to remain relevant will ALWAYS LEAD to the feet of God.  EVERY CHURCH that seeks to obey Him totally and completely WILL REMAIN RELEVANT.  And WILL BUILD THE KINGDOM OF GOD.  And WILL FULFILL THE GREAT COMMISSION.  And that is my vision and desire for Ebenezer, because I believe that is GOD’S VISION AND DESIRE FOR EBC.

And the only way EBC will do this is if the PEOPLE that make up EBC DO IT!!!!  You see where this is heading??  And the same rule applies to ANY CHURCH.  Think about it!!!!

WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?!

15 Feb

Last night I attended one of Drew’s basketball games … on Valentine’s Day … Yeah, I know.  As we waited for the game before ours to finish, I was disappointed in a man I know.  At least, I’ve seen him attend church basketball league games FOR YEARS.  I don’t know his name, and that is a good thing right now … Because I believe HE is what is wrong with our church basketball league today.

As the game before ours was winding down, the ref made a call he didn’t like.  Have you ever noticed that when a referee makes a call in ANY kind of sport, HALF of the fans there DO NOT LIKE IT???  I wonder why??

Anyway, he went on a tirade that ended with an expletive … I was standing there, stunned, wondering “Did I really hear that??”  From that moment on, I had one eye and one ear on this guy.  At one point, I think his wife told him I was the pastor at EBC … (Or that I had no father … my lip reading is not great).

Needless to say, he did not say ANOTHER WORD.  But when I look at this, it helps me understand why those kids all act like this is life-or-death.  THIS IS CHURCH BASKETBALL.  That is all.  Not something to die over.  Certainly not something to step into God’s house and cuss about.

Any spectator in the EBC FLC is an invited guest of EBC.  And, legally, we can ask someone not to return if their activity warrants it.  The next time I hear anyone yelling like that, you can bet I will ask them to leave.  Our referees (who have control of the entire gym during a game) will be instructed to do the same.

And I sit here, not surprised, but disappointed …

Ten years??

11 Feb

On February 3, 2001, Ebenezer made a bold and daring move.  Some said it was a great one.  Some said disastrous.  They called their former youth pastor as their senior pastor.  And life has never been the same since …

And I realized this week that the tenth anniversary of that day had passed.  I will never forget that day, nor will I forget the events leading up to it!!

Ebenezer had been through some tough years (some of which I was a part, and some before we came to Florence).  In August of 1999 I was asked to preach for six Sundays while the Pastor Search Committee found an interim pastor so they could begin their search.  I’ve been doing that almost every Sunday since then!!

But on the Sunday the vote … the Sunday when I had to preach a trial sermon … WOW.  I don’t think I’ve ever felt that kind of pressure or been on that much of an emotional rollercoaster in my life!!  You cannot imagine and I hope you never have to experience it.  It really brought me face-to-face with how much I love Ebenezer and how much I really had to trust God to carry me.  I’ll never forget that day!

When I look back over those years, I KNOW God was in control and had a plan because there is NO WAY I COULD’VE MADE IT WITHOUT HIM!!  We’ve been through some really tough times and some great times, too!  And I can honestly say I’ve never been more excited about what God is doing in this place than RIGHT NOW!!  My prayer is that He will restore my first love for this place and keep leading all of us toward HIS goals for Ebenezer!!!

Seriously …

9 Feb

IF you don’t care about what God is doing in your life, around your life, and around EBC, you probably DO NOT want to attend worship this Sunday.  I am not writing this as a gimmick or trying to draw attention.  I am serious.

I believe with all of my heart God is tired of games, and there are too many people at Ebenezer (and many other churches around the nation) who are playing games with Him and playing games with His church.  It’s time to DO THE RIGHT THING, EBENEZER.

Spiritual Warfare

3 Feb

Lately, Ebenezerites have heard me refer to spiritual warfare a great deal.  Some probably think I’ve gone off the deep end, but I remind you spiritual warfare is real, biblical, and happening DAILY all around us.  If you believe Satan is NOT at work attacking God’s church, you are EXACTLY where he wants you to be!!!

Last week, as weekly staff meeting wound down, this topic came up as a prayer request.  Then, like dominoes, it all started:  Every person in that circle brought forward an area in their ministry where there are MAJOR ATTACKS RIGHT NOW!  And we all sat there a little stunned because we had NO IDEA each person in that room had specific attacks going on.  SEVERAL of the attacks were coming from the same source.  And it reminded us we need to PRAY FOR EACH OTHER!!

You can believe this:  I LOVE OUR STAFF AT EBC.  And it pains me greatly when they are hurting.  We had an awesome group therapy session that ended with the reminder that we are called to LOVE ALL and pray God will work and fight these spiritual battles for us!!  Satan wants us to take these things personally and square-off against PEOPLE  instead of recognizing this for what it is:  SPIRITUAL WARFARE.

Sometimes I wonder why good people will allow themselves to be used as pawns in this warfare.  WHENEVER WE FOCUS ON OUR WANTS INSTEAD OF GOD’S WILL, THIS WILL HAPPEN!!!!  Some of us get into the habit of believing God’s will is whatever we want … That’s a dangerous habit.

So, as Paul reminded us, we need to put on the full armor of God and stand in the gap!!  Stand up for each other and ask God to stand for us!!  AND HE WILL!!!!

The Passive-Aggressive Shuffle

21 Jan

Not as flamboyant as the SuperBowl Shuffle (performed by the ’85 Chicago Bears), the Passive-Aggressive Shuffle is a dance often-performed at volunteer organizations worldwide.  VERY OFTEN this dance can be seen at churches, especially those which are volunteer-led.  And I see it all the time!!

I’m no Simon Cowell, but … wait a minute … I’m really dipping low with that comparison.  Okay, I’m not a professional talent judge, but I can tell you the PA Shuffle is NEVER a good thing.  I’ve never seen it work well and I’ve never seen it build the kingdom of God or build others up.  It results in quite the opposite.

The passive-aggressive approach is close to our human nature.  When we are angered and feel threatened, our nature will lead us to a defensive posture.  Passive-aggressivism is a way to defend ourselves without actually appearing to take action.  It often includes half-truths, twisted truths, and a dab of misinformation.  And it is very harmful to the church!!

There is a strong biblical approach to conflict resolution.  It’s not easy, but it IS God’s way and results in building His kingdom, His church, and His people.  Here is a great article on that:

http://www.peaceful-conflict-resolution.com/biblicalconflictresolution-2.html

For goodness sake, please do the right thing when it comes to conflict!!  The church NEEDS people who are sold out to God and dedicated to doing the right thing!!

The Value of it all …

17 Jan

One of the greatest resources available to YOU TODAY is free.  And often goes untapped.

When I think about what God is doing at Ebenezer right now, I am humbled.  Thankful to be a part.  Sunday School is STRONG and serves to bind us into close relationships with others for support and accountability.  Worship sets the tone of where we are going as a church:  Our vision, our mission, our marching orders.

When people choose to pursue one but not both facets of Sunday morning, they sell themselves short.  There is something really meaningful happening in morning worship AND in each small group class at Ebenezer.  All excuses aside, there are too many people missing out on one or the other OR BOTH of these!!!

So, here I am this morning praying for Ebenezer.  Praying for my fellow pastors in Florence and their churches.  Praying that we will ALL seek the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and do the right thing in every aspect of our lives!!  Join me!!

The following is a repost from Ron Jackson and Parson’s Pantry:

2 Jan

Happy New Year and I pray 2011 will be great for you in the the service and ministry of our Lord!!! The Lord blessed

the ministry of Parson’s Pantry in a wonderful way in 2010. The Lord provided the resources to help 123 needy pastors,

retired pastors, widows of pastors and married ministerial students with $62,800 dollars this past year. We were able to

reach our goal of $200,010 in the year 2010. We had prayed that the Lord would allow us to reach this amount given

to help needy families since we started the ministry. At the end of 2009 we had granted $139,550 dollars and at the end

of 2010 we have been able to give $202,350 dollars to 426 needy families. Praise the name of our Lord! He is doing the

work and it is all about Him!

Please be in prayer for the ministry of Parson’s Pantry. The needs are great and more could be done with the

support of God’s people. We are so grateful for the churches who have Parson’s Pantry in their budgets and indivduals

who give on a regular basis. We thank the Lord for more than 20 Parson’s Pantry Partners who pray for the ministry

and make a monthly gift. We are asking the Lord to raise up more Parson’s Pantry Partners this year.

A widow of a pastor in SC said,”I continue to be amazed at how our Lord works! The timing for receiving the gift was unbelievable. Thank you for being our loving Lord’s instrument to meet my needs.”

A student at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary said, ” Thank you so much for your financial assistance.

These have been difficult days financially with family and school expenses. God has used you to demonstrate His

Faithfulness to us again. Thank you for all you do to help fellow ministers.”

A retired Pastor in SC said, ” What a blessing you have been to me and my wife as I try to daily climb a mountain of serious health problems.Know you have made my life brighter with the generous gift. I am thankful for the ministry of

Parson’s Pantry and all you do to help the Lord’s servants!”

One hundred per cent of all tax deductable gifts goes to help needy families. We are praying the Lord will provide the resources this year to go over $300,000 dollars – $300,011 in 2011! Gifts are sent to Parson’s Pantry PO Box 777, Gaffney,SC 29342. We can be contacted by calling 864-489-6709 or cell 864-490-0596, Ron Jackson.

Why we do this …

15 Dec

I’ve got to be honest about this:  There are times when it is difficult to push ahead.  But I can’t say I wasn’t warned!  I remember when I took my first job in ministry, and one of the pastors of this church looked at me and said:  “If you can be happy doing anything else, do it.”  I was puzzled by that remark, full of excitement and ready to charge Hell with a waterpistol.  Now I know EXACTLY what he was talking about.

Sometimes it really is hard to deal with what Dean Lisenby calls the 5% rule … at any given time, 5% of the people will think you can do no wrong, and ANOTHER 5% will think you can do NOTHING RIGHT.  All churches have this, whether they will admit it or not.  Ebenezer is no exception.

I remember my statistics days, and think of it as a Bell Curve:

Budget time is a very stressful time at any church.  Especially stressful when we are not meeting our yearly budget.  Honestly, we are not doing as bad as some I know (in relation to how far behind we are).  And we are not doing as well as some, who are exceeding their budget requirements.  I’ve been convinced for some time now that MONEY is not the problem:  Our problem (and the problem at many churches) is an issue of SPIRITUAL HEALTH, and once we get that started on the healing track, our financial support will fall in line where God wants it.

Getting back to the 5%, it gets a little long in the tooth when the same people say the same old things over and over, many of these things NOT favorable towards me, as a pastor, or my staff.  We are not a bunch of lazy folks who sit around all day drinking coffee and gossiping.  We each stretch to the max in our work efforts and don’t complain about it.  There are so many things unseen that are done in a week it would make your head spin!!  And we are not flamboyant about it, trying to draw attention to all of our hard work …  And sometimes, that burns us.  And we are not a bunch of money-hungry wild spenders who do nothing but spend the churches’ money with no regard for common sense or stewardship to the Lord.  In fact, you would find your church staff to be quite the opposite.  And, although there IS a 5% that loves us quite unconditionally and thinks we do no wrong (by the way, we DO make mistakes), its the other 5% and the things they say that motivated this post.

I’ve been thinking ALOT about this in the past couple of days.  And here is the truth about where we are:

We don’t do this for recognition.

We don’t do this so the 5% will get off our backs.

We don’t do this to be the most popular people in church.

We don’t seek power, control, or influence.

We don’t do this because it is easy.

We don’t do this because we couldn’t do anything else in life.

WE DO THIS BECAUSE GOD CALLED US TO IT.  WE DO THIS FOR HIM.  And, remembering those two things help me endure the barbs that come with sitting behind my desk.  They help me when I want to react angrily when someone says something ugly about my staff.  They help me when I want to be angry because someone was very ugly to a family member because of MY JOB!!

GOD helps toughen our skin and gives us a goal to focus on, so we don’t have to slow down and think about all of the junk.  So make NO mistake about this:  We are HIS, and are doing our best to FOLLOW HIM in everything we do.  And I am thankful He called me to this place!!!!
