This week I am at the Worship Facilities Expo in Atlanta. I wondered why God brought me here … Something compelled me to come and I was unsure what it was. I just wondered if it was because I needed a little break or something … But God had another plan.
Because HE has shown up in a big way. I don’t know how many churches are represented here this week, but I am finding that many, many churches face the same issues we face. And we ALL need to refocus on God and what HE is doing. We as churches try to plan too much sometimes. Our faith is weak. We need HIM to make it, NOT US!!!
Ironic that I’ve been working on a sermon for Sunday out of Joshua 24. And God CLEARLY put some things on my heart from these sessions to share. It’s almost as if He brought me here to make me sit down and listen to a message I’ve got to take back to Florence.
I am praying for you this week, Ebenezer. I hope you are praying for me (and you can pray for Robbie and Dean, too)!!!
I wondered why God brought me here …
3 NovThe Blind Side
29 OctWalking on the Rail Trail is therapy for me … There are surreal moments (like when “You can still rock in America” by Night Ranger comes on and I am walking on an old railroad bed??? Get it?? Think about the video) and there are times when I can just think. This can be good or bad, depending on my current state of mind.
And, I’ll be honest: The last two weeks have been very difficult. I’ve faced things I never thought I’d face. And I started thinking about the Blind Side.
Not the movie, the concept: Every quarterback has a blind side. When he squares to throw the ball, his unprotected back WILL BE EXPOSED for a period of time. And in life, WE ALL ARE IN THOSE SPOTS AT TIMES. This is not a pity-party: I have some of the best friends in the world who I KNOW HAVE MY BACK. But there are times when circumstances change and you can feel the blind side exposed. And those times are NOT FUN.
Like I just wrote, I KNOW I have friends who’ve got my back … and I have theirs. But there are times when all of us are exposed. There are times when people let you down. And you can fret, and you can be disappointed, and you can be angry. And, honestly, those responses just complicate your situation.
Have you ever stopped to realize that people are FALLIBLE, JUST HUMAN. They make mistakes and they are imperfect. THAT IS LIFE. But if you ever stop long enough to pray about all of this, God might just let you in on a little secret. He might ask you “why are you depending on PEOPLE to protect your blind side when that is MY JOB??” (My being said by GOD ALMIGHTY)
If you stop long enough to think and pray about all of this, God DOES have your blind side. And He will NEVER FAIL YOU.
My Boss
27 OctBeing the pastor of a Southern Baptist church is no piece of cake … And, being a MIDDLE CHILD while serving in that role only COMPLICATES things! I work in what is statistically one of the most unstable professions in America. Statistics report the average tenure of a Southern Baptist minister to be somewhere in the area of 18 MONTHS. And that is NOT because there is a bishop or higher power reassigning them: They just get fired!!
However … I ultimately answer to a Boss that is a little higher up the ladder than the 1,300 members of Ebenezer Baptist Church. I answer to GOD ALMIGHTY, Creator of Heaven and Earth, Sustainer of all that exists. HE is in control. HE beckons for His people to STOP FEARING the future and JUST OBEY HIM. HE has a plan for each of our lives that is so much greater than anything I could conceive, a PERFECT PLAN for MY LIFE and for yours!!
Actually, if Jesus Christ is your Savior, He is YOUR BOSS TOO!! If we will ALL slow down enough to listen to Him and then OBEY Him life will IMMEDIATELY become much less stressful and more rewarding.
So, come on … Listen to THE BOSS!!! HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING!!
Knowing God’s Will
27 SepMany people who are MUCH SMARTER in THEOLOGICAL realms have written many books, papers, and articles about knowing God’s will for our lives. So why tackle this on a rainy Monday morning in the FloSC?? Because IT’S MY TURN!! We touched a little on this yesterday in worship and I want to deal with it a little more today …
In Jeremiah 29, God assured the Children of Israel He WOULD bring them back from captivity in Babylon. Even though life seemed hopeless, there was still hope for them!!
In verses 11-13, God said these words: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
I believe these words hold true to us as well!! Even though this was specifically directed to these in captivity, God’s nature rings through loud and clear in this passage: He has a plan for YOU!! A GOOD PLAN!! God desires that you KNOW HOPE and KNOW that He has plans for YOUR FUTURE!!
The discovery of this plan can be as much of a journey as YOU desire it to be … In Pee Dee-speak, you can really BOG DOWN IN THE MUD on this one if you are not careful!! Finding God’s will for your life is not as difficult as you might imagine! Sure, there are times when we need a specific answer and God requires us to wait … His timing is ALWAYS PERFECT!
But Jesus gave us a very specific starting place with this, which you will find in Matthew 28 and in Acts 1. We are called to be IMPERFECT VESSELS carrying the GOOD NEWS of JESUS CHRIST to all the world!!! We are called to GO MAKE DISCIPLES, to BAPTIZE THEM, TO TEACH THEM EVERYTHING HE HAS TAUGHT US. And we go with HIS POWER and HIS PRESENCE to do it!!
When it comes to specifics of God’s will for our lives, the real question is HOW does He want me to share and WHERE does He want me to share?? Everything else is pretty clear!
Before I get a million contradictory comments, YES, I KNOW GOD CALLS EACH OF US TO SPECIFIC ROLES AND GIFTS IN THE KINGDOM!! But you have to admit that it all BEGINS with the GREAT COMMISSION!!
The GC is the first step to knowing God’s specific will for your life!! Until you take that step and begin to tell others, you will be bogged down in the mud!!
A Turning Point??
20 SepYesterday was a tough day for me at Ebenezer. It’s never easy to take a message like that into the pulpit. But deep down in my heart I KNOW it was the right thing to do!!
If you want to go check it out, hit this link: http://www.truthcasting.com/player.aspx#showChannel=100000030
My prayer is this will be a turning point in our hearts and lives. A time when we realize that WORSHIP REALLY IS NOT ALL ABOUT US, OUR LIKES, OUR WANTS, OUR COMFORT, OUR CONVENIENCE. WORSHIP IS ALL ABOUT GOD!!! So, why don’t we concern ourselves with HIS WANTS???
Seriously … And Jesus Himself TOLD US what God expects: TRUE WORSHIP happens when we worship Him in spirit and in truth. When we love Him with all of our hearts, minds, bodies, souls, and all of our strength. When we love each other MORE than we love ourselves. When we stop judging each other … Wait, when we stop doing ALL OF THE THINGS that are God’s job!! When we allow Him to be God and we accept that we are His people!!!
I could go on and on, but I hope you get it by now! We’ve got to get back to all of this being ABOUT HIM and NOT ABOUT US! We need to WAKE UP and REALIZE that we cannot do this on our own … WE NEED GOD!! When we start trusting Him THAT WAY, things will start happening for the Kingdom of God that we cannot explain except to KNOW that it is GOD!!
So … is this a turning point?
Durned if you do, durned if you don’t
25 AugThe story of my life … If EVER there was a living, breathing Charlie Brown, you are reading his blog. And then I surrender to God’s call to ministry. And I learn the REAL trap Charlie Brown was in!!
If ever there was an occupation where you are durned if you do something AND durned if you don’t do it, it is ministry. There are ALWAYS expectations out there that any pastor CANNOT meet. Why?? Because churches are full of people … people that ALL have different opinions. For example: If the sanctuary air temp is 71 degrees, there are ALWAYS people fanning and complaining that it is too hot. AND there are ALWAYS people shivering and pulling out their Snugglies because it is too cold. And there are some that think the room is JUSSSSST RIGHT!!! (We can call that the Goldilocks Syndrome)
When that syndrome is applied to preaching styles and topics, I hear the things I’ve heard lately. “David is too positive …he never tackles the tough topics.” “David is too negative … why does he have to be negative.” “That sure was a good sermon. Really stepped on my toes.” Welcome to MY WORLD!!!!
How do I cope? It’s really not a bad method … I ASK GOD WHAT TO PREACH!! I TRUST HIM TO GIVE ME THE WORDS AS I STUDY AND AS I DELIVER THE MESSAGE. I really do believe He leads me in His directions when I prepare. So, the truth is, if anyone has complaints, they need to take them up with HIM!!!
As long as I remember that I answer to HIM, that HE is my boss, my sanity stays intact ….
Are you ready to choose?
23 AugJoshua 24:14 “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Are YOU ready to choose today? EVERYDAY we make the choice. Will we serve God, or will we serve OURSELVES?? I believe with all of my heart that God is sick of our lukewarm, selfish choices. So … WHICH WILL YOU CHOOSE TODAY??
Remember the plans!!
18 AugRemember what God told the children of Israel through Jeremiah in Jeremiah 29:11?? “For I know the plans I have for you, ” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” SO … God has a plan for HIS PEOPLE!!! If you belong to Him, He has a plan for YOU!!
Easy words to hear, but hard words to live. Especially when it comes to relationships. I am one of those who believe that God has a plan for every aspect of your life, EVEN MARRIAGE. And, if you want to know the fullness and completion a marriage is supposed to bring, you need to find the right partner!! Paul knew what he was saying when he wrote that we should not be unequally yoked. The marital relationship should be a reflection of the love, mercy, and grace of God, and bring glory to Him!!
Consider the story of two brothers, each of whom knows Christ. Each married for his own reasons and on his own timetable. One of them married young and against the wishes of many friends and family. He wanted a bride to complete his life. He did what he thought would make him happy. (When we pursue our happiness over God’s plan for us, it NEVER works out to our advantage.) In a couple of decades of marriage, he has endured emotional abuse, separations, infidelities, and much misery.
The other brother took his time. Sought God’s face about it. Found a bride who is also a believer. Marriage, for them, continues to be a great journey. Now, don’t get me wrong: They face obstacles, temptations, struggles, and great problems. But they face each one hand-in-hand, and they work hard to put their hands into the very Hands that formed the world.
These are real brothers. These are true facts. Neither has a perfect life, but would you rather walk through the harshness of life WITH God or WITHOUT??
REMEMBER THE PLANS.
Doing the right thing
12 JulI know that doing the right thing is always the way God wants me to go. Sometimes it is also the most difficult path forward.
Don’t get me wrong … Sometimes it is EASY to do the right thing. And OBVIOUS. And then there are times in life when it is not easy … and not so obvious. Times when PRAYER and TRUST IN GOD are the only guides I have going for me. As a pastor, there are times when I KNOW I will catch flack for doing the right thing. Sometimes God calls us to do things that are not popular and not so readily understood by others.
And, yet, I know if I trust Him and stay close, He will protect me from all of that. And He will protect His church.
Ultimately, as much as I love His church, I know He loves it a billion times more …And that’s a lot!
Places of Great Faith
1 JulYou know how everyone goes through patches in their lives where it seems the attacks are coming from all sides and all you have as your shield is Jesus Christ??? Yeah … I’m there right now. There are difficulties on many fronts right now. Diana and I are facing many opportunities for our faith to grow!! And I am thankful to be facing them with her …
Where do YOU turn in places like this? I am thankful that no matter how crazy things get, God is there and He cares! And He has a plan!!!
