The Prophet

14 Oct

I love my job.  I really do.  But there are difficult times and difficult things about my job.  I really don’t like the times when I have to disappoint my family … They have been so great all of these years, but it gets tough at times.  There are other things that I won’t list here, but the positives DO far outweigh the negatives.  But there is one more that you never get used to … It’s a tough yet necessary part of what I do.  That is “speaking the truth from God, no matter how it will be received.”

The role of the prophet in the Old Testament was to speak such truth.  There were times when they brought GREAT news from God.  And there were times when they had to stand before kings and governors and tell them the truth from God, and at times even put there own lives at risk.  We talk about the average tenure of a Southern Baptist minister to be around 18 months … Sometimes the LIFESPAN of a prophet (after delivering such news) was much less!!

No pastor worth his salt ever enjoys bringing bad news to his flock.  Yet there are times when we ALL need to turn back to God.  We all need to give our lives and everything in them COMPLETELY to Him.  We all need to give Him the glory due His name.

Will we do the right thing?

16 Sep

There is a lot of buzz and excitement surrounding Fam Jam 2013, a Christian music festival sponsored by Ebenezer and Radio Free Florence this weekend.  I am grateful for the “For Those Who Dare” Sunday School class and all of their hard work producing this event.  Much prayer and planning has gone into this.  And, at the end of the day, I wonder if we will do the right thing.

Once, a man approached Jesus and asked Him, “What kind of clothes must I wear to attend church?”  Jesus answered, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, ‘You MUST wear dress pants, a collared shirt, and a conventional tie or bow tie.  And a sports coat would be nice, but a suit would be AWESOME.  And if you don’t wear clothes like this, you will NOT please Me and you might not get into Heaven.'”

Okay, that NEVER happened.  Jesus never said those things.  When asked by the Samaritan woman about the right place to worship, Jesus told her that God seeks people that worship Him with ALL OF THEIR HEART.  No mention of bow ties.  No mention of the right kind of shoes or clothes.  So I wonder why WE, the church, place so much importance on those things???

My prayer for this weekend is that we will see many people who do not know Christ, and that we might have a chance to introduce them to Christ.  And I am also praying we won’t give them a pamphlet on the dress code or the appropriate things to do to “FIT IN” at Ebenezer.  Because, quite frankly, NONE of that is biblical.  And you can check me on that if you wish!!

Life-saving station

9 Sep

I hope you were able to attend the HOW report last night.  Excitement is building and God is doing something, and I am excited that Ebenezer people care about those who are lost around us!!!  As we focus on what God wants us to do as our next steps, let us never forget that building any kind of building will not reach the 17,000+ lost people within a three-mile radius of our church.   NOTHING will happen until we tell them!

I don’t know the origin of this story.  I found it years ago and have used it more than once in a sermon.  Today, I am praying we at Ebenezer remember and get excited about what God has called us to do , and never become like this.  Join me in that prayer.

The story:

On a dangerous sea coast where shipwrecks often occur, there was once a crude little life-saving station. The building was just a hut, and there was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea and with no thought for themselves went out day and night tirelessly searching for the lost. Some of those who were saved, and various others in the surrounding area, wanted to become associated with the station and give of their time and money and effort for the support of its work. New boats were bought and new crews trained. The little lifesaving station grew.

Some members of the lifesaving station were unhappy that the building was so crude and poorly equipped. They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided as the first refuge of those saved from the sea. They replaced the emergency cots with beds and put better furniture in the enlarged building. Now the lifesaving station became a popular gathering place for its members, and they decorated it beautifully and furnished it exquisitely, because they used it as sort of a club.

Fewer members were now interested in going to sea on lifesaving missions, so they hired lifeboat crews to do this work. The lifesaving motif still prevailed in this club’s decorations, and there was a miniature lifeboat in the room where the club initiations were held.

About this time a large ship was wrecked off the coast, and the hired crews brought in boatloads of cold, wet, and half-drowned people. They were dirty and sick, and some of them had black skin and some had yellow skin. The beautiful new club was in chaos. So the property committee immediately had a shower house built outside the club where victims of shipwreck could be cleaned up before coming inside.

At the next meeting, there was a split in the club membership. Most of the members wanted to stop the club’s lifesaving activities, since they were unpleasant and a hindrance to the normal social life of the club. Some members insisted upon lifesaving as their primary purpose and pointed out that they were still called a lifesaving station. But they were finally voted down and told that if they wanted to save the lives of all the various kinds of people who were shipwrecked in those waters, they could begin their own lifesaving station down the coast. They did.

As the years went by, the new station experienced the same changes that had occurred in the old. It evolved into a club, and yet another lifesaving station was founded. History continued to repeat itself, and if you visit that sea coast today you will find a number of exclusive clubs along the shore. Shipwrecks are frequent in those waters, but most of the people drown.

Forever changed

26 Aug

Two Sunday evenings ago, I got one of “those” phone calls.  A young man whom I knew was shot and killed.  A young man in his prime, with a young wife and five-month-old son.  And lives will be forever changed.

I know his mother and father well.  Many who loved them rushed to their sides, and have been there ever since.  The childhood friends of this young man have stepped in and continue to faithfully do so.  All are in shock.  None of us believed the stories we were hearing from the city he lived in … Shot by his wife after an alleged attack.  None of it made sense.  None of it added up.  And lives ARE forever changed.

This past Friday, the news reached Florence that his “widow” was arrested for Murder.  That does answer questions that many of us suspected were true … But, lives are still forever changed.  Don’t get me wrong:  We are all thankful for justice and praying for it.  But at this point, there is no good end to this story.  A family will forever be without a son and a brother.  A little boy will grow up, never really knowing a father who was already awesome and would’ve been wonderful for that little man.  From that day forward, many lives are and will be forever changed.

It reminds us all that there are times in life when we MUST STEP UP.  I know all of those friends will step up for that little boy when they get the chance.  Instead of one father, he will have a bunch!  And I am praying they will show him and tell him what kind of man his dad was.  I know the friends of his mother and father will continue to step up and hold them up.  Help them walk through life.  There might even be a day, heaven forbid, that they will be called to help another family that faces such a hard event.

No matter what happens from here, our lives are forever changed.  And this, again, is proof that life is far from perfect.  That life is very hard.   And the only way we can make it through is with the love and grace of God the Father, salvation in Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of other believers.  And if you don’t believe me, come and see me someday.  I will SHOW you all of that in action right now in the house of my friends whose lives are forever changed…

Back in the Grind

21 Aug

School has begun!!  And for the first time in 16 years, I do not have a student in Florence School District 1 schools!! YIPPEEEE!!!  Now I won’t get 40 calls a week from their PhoneTree.  But, I digress …

Another summer has come and gone.  The older I get, the quicker they fly by.  We in Florence begin another school year and things start cranking back up all over town.  And, especially at Ebenezer.  But I wonder:  Will this be just another year??  Do we hop back into the same groove and do another year on autopilot??  What does He want US to change?  To improve?  To DO this school year?

I think hopping back into the same groove every year has another name, and that name is RUT.  And, seriously, do we want to find ourselves in the same ruts of life that can entrap us, that stunt our growth, and force us in the same directions and towards the same habits??  Do you REALLY think that’s what God wants for you?

God really wants what is best for you.  That means He wants you to be in a growing and vibrant relationship with HIm.  He wants you to FOLLOW HIM, and if we are truly following Him, He is constantly using us to plow new ground.  God seldom puts us in a rut… When we find ourselves in one, it is usually because of our own hands.

We all might be back in the grind of yet ANOTHER school year, but don’t let it force you into a rut.  Pursue a FRESH relationship with God TODAY.  And EVERYDAY.  And if you are in Florence and you need help with that, come see me at Ebenezer!!

Unfortunately …

12 Aug

In the last three days, two younger men I knew have lost their lives.  One to an accident and one to something that was not.  In the process of all of this, families and friends are in shock.  “Why?” doesn’t even seem to be an adequate question.  What now??

Death is indiscriminate.  We seldom ever know why and it is hard for us to be comfortable with this.  Sometimes there are no answers, and we like answers.  We want to know.  Some of the hardest times we will face in life will be times like these, where there might be no answers.

In both cases, all we can do is rest in the knowledge that these men had confessed Christ as their Savior.  Sometimes that just has to be enough …

And He is enough.  Praying for two families right now.  Join me.

The Future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades

22 Jul

From where I sit, the future is EXTREMELY BRIGHT for those who follow the Lord!!  If you really believe Psalm 46, then once again we KNOW there is nothing to fear for those who follow God.  Those who make His will and His word a priority in their lives WILL FACE CHALLENGES, but none of these challenges are any match for our Mighty God!

As I prepare to visit Honduras and spend time with churches who really place God above ALL in their daily lives, I covet that same heart for Ebenezer.  We live in a world that works to separate us from God and actively (and aggressively) seeks to push God to the outside of the mainstream.  What the world doesn’t realize is that Jesus talked about “the mainstream” in Matthew 7:13 when He said “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” (NIV)

I believe with all my heart that God is calling Florence, SC, back to Him.  And it starts at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the hearts of BELIEVERS.  And it spreads from there!!  As I pray and think about the next few weeks and months, I pray that we are not only up to the challenge, but that we will step up and follow Him with ALL THAT WE ARE.

Purpose WITHIN the Church

15 Jul

In a little over a week, I have a tremendous privilege waiting for me in Honduras:  I will have an opportunity or two to sit down with pastors and talk about what God is doing in their midst.  I am NOT an expert, but we will share about vision … about developing leaders … about Biblical authority … and about anything else that is on their hearts.  And it all leads to PURPOSE.

When I read The Purpose Driven Church (by Rick Warren), it was an eye-opening experience for me.  Proverbs 29:18 says “Without vision, people perish.”  Without a God-given purpose, the CHURCH is in danger of perishing right before our eyes!!  HOW do we discover our purpose as a church??  SEEK GOD’S FACE and ASK HIM!!  We (the ministerial staff of EBC) have been doing this lately.  Spending time together and apart seeking God’s face and asking Him what HE wants to accomplish with Ebenezer.  When we look at where He is at work, it’s not hard to see:  Children’s ministry, Youth ministry, families, the TONS of lost people within the shadow of our steeple.  Ebenezer has much to do and we are constantly seeking His guidance to prioritize how to accomplish His will.

How about you?  Where do YOU fit in?  Have you ever considered that the purpose of the church defines itself as each of US find OUR purpose in His kingdom??  As we do the will of God in our lives, the purpose of the church will be accomplished.  God WILL give us the vision, but we must do His will for each of us to accomplish that vision.  This all hinges on YOU … and ME.

Will we accomplish His will??  That remains to be seen …. But I sure hope so!!

One more thought about RESPECT

17 Jun

RESPECT.  It must be earned.

People will respect your title or position, only for a while.  It might buy a little time until you prove yourself deserving of their respect.

I think that is part of where Paul was headed in Ephesians 5 & 6 when he wrote about Fathers, Mothers, and Children.  Specifically, FATHERS, you MUST live a life that is respectable.  Do you want your wife to really respect you?  To FOLLOW your lead?  Make the lead RESPECTABLE.  Do you want your children to HONOR you??  Live a life worthy of their admiration and honor.

And, again:  NO ONE IS PERFECT.  You won’t be, either.  But be enough of a man to realize when you’ve made a mistake and MAKE IT RIGHT.

Don’t back away

22 May

We are called.  Called to be the hands and feet of the Kingdom of God.  Called to be light and salt in a world in DESPERATE need of the truth.  Called to be the voice of the Good News.

How are we doing on that??  The Holy Spirit will empower us and direct us.  Through Him, God will show us exactly WHAT WE NEED TO DO, WHERE WE NEED TO GO, and WHAT WE NEED TO SAY.  So, what could we possibly have to fear??

The devil WANTS YOU to be afraid … be VERY afraid.  He wants you to shrink back and hide.  He does NOT want you to use your hands, feet, mind, voice, or anything else to build the Kingdom of God.

I don’t know what God is calling YOU to do today, but DON’T BACK AWAY!!  If God called you to it, you can bet He has your back ALL THE WAY THROUGH IT.
